Mooroolbark Station and Community Hub

The State Government initiative that led to this project, “Train Stations as Creative Community Hubs”, encapsulates our approach to public infrastructure and our conceptual design thinking behind the Mooroolbark Station and Community Hub.

The inclusive nature of the resulting ‘place’ aspires to long-term community relevance and a high quality, memorable and safe setting for the enjoyment of public life.

Outlines helped steer the brief towards an inclusive landscape response, offering an entirely open concept of a ‘hub’ which is as much about the welcoming approach and integrated surrounds as the building itself. As a new entry and sculptural landmark, the sinuous canopy invites the public into the station and on to the grassed forecourt. Its form and detailing acknowledge the community’s perceived sense of place at the foothills of the forested Dandenong Ranges.
