Upper Yarra River Warburton

Warburton has long been a popular swimming spot on the Upper Yarra River treasured by locals and visitors alike.

Facing the issue of an unsafe and eroding river bank, Yarra Ranges Shire engaged Outlines to develop a design which met complex bank stabilisation requirements but also enhanced the natural beauty of the space and connection to the river edge environment.

Our conceptual approach was grounded in engineered ecology. The use of stepped mudstone slabs with strong resistance to the erosive forces of the river generate small eddy currents resulting in the natural deposition of river sands recruitment of riverbank vegetation. Functionally, the steps are the perfect height for accessing the water safely and sitting in or near the water’s edge.
